This information can be essential in donor selection, especially in the Dalmatian, Doberman, Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apso breeds, which reportedly have a higher percentage of DAL-negative blood types. It is also useful in determining the cause of an incompatible crossmatch between DEA 1 compatible dogs.
As many as 98% of canines, including blood donors, carry the DAL antigen. This antigen elicits strong immunogenicity. Sensitisation through transfusion can occur in dogs that lack it.
DAL-negative blood types are more common in certain breeds and they are more at risk of delayed and acute haemolytic transfusion reactions if transfused with DAL-positive blood.
